MAPUK was selected for this project due to our proven expertise in delivering bespoke design solutions. Our task was to design and deliver 50 custom displacement units to ensure optimal airflow and cooling, accommodating the terminal’s varying population densities.

We designed the displacement terminals to be controlled by Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes, integrating essential services such as lighting, public address (PA) systems, fire alarms and power. Working closely with Henderson Green and TNG Consulting, we ensured the highest standards of design and efficiency were met, the terminal incorporates a range of energy-saving measures that could reduce primary thermal energy consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to a conventionally designed building. To validate the effectiveness of our design, MAPUK conducted Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis prior to production, utilising advanced software tools to optimise airflow and thermal management throughout the terminal.

To ensure both functionality and passenger safety, several unique features were incorporated into the bespoke design for the Ocean Cruise Terminal:

  • Bump guard rail: provides protection against potential damage to the terminal’s infrastructure.

  • Integrated PA system: enhances safety and passenger experience by providing clear communication throughout the terminal.

  • Top-mounted lighting: ensures adequate illumination and visibility for both passengers and staff.

  • Low-level power outlets: strategically positioned to meet various operational needs.

As part of the innovative HVAC design, MAPUK specified the use of Bevent Rasch round displacement units, ensuring optimal airflow and comfort throughout the terminal.

The completed Ocean Cruise Terminal is a state-of-the-art facility that sets new benchmarks for energy efficiency and passenger comfort. The integration of advanced HVAC technology, effective utilisation of waste energy and comprehensive design solutions has created a terminal that not only meets the operational needs of passengers and staff but also significantly reduces its environmental footprint.
